Staycation in the sun

A busy schedule at work combined with my feeble attempt to finally finish my master’s thesis have left little time for fun (or blogging) the past few weeks. This past weekend a “heat wave” struck Amsterdam so Sebastiaan I decided to completely unplug and enjoy a warm weekend off in the city.

Aside from a few hours working on my thesis Saturday morning, we truly felt like vacationers in our own city. We had lunch at one of our favorite cafes, lounged at a floating swimming pool on the Amstel river in the afternoon and ate gourmet pizza outside for dinner. That night we went biked downtown to a canal festival on the Prinsengracht. It was absolutely unbelievable. With a stage floating inside the canal and what looked like a few hundred boat filling the water, it was like nothing I’ve ever seen. We found a nice spot and enjoyed some prosecco and sorbet as we listen to a selection of classical, opera and contemporary music. After a long stroll along the canals we caught the end of an outdoor film on Heinekenplein and enjoyed a few late night drinks at our favorite local bar.

Sunday morning we headed to the beach for the day to meet Sebastiaan’s parents and some friends. After a few hours relaxing in the sun, corona in hand, the clouds started rolling in. Determined to keep up the momentum of our little “staycation” we decided to move our beach BBQ to our balcony and feast with friends.

Sitting outside on our balcony watching the sunset  was the perfect ending to a surprisingly relaxing weekend.

While getting up for work this morning was a tad more difficult than usual. I actually feel a bit recharged and ready for the week ahead.

If only this sunshine would stick around just a bit longer…
